Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value public transit, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely tough and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Eastside) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in Downtown for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from Chicago, I was surprised by pet-friendliness. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:

- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- The public transit scene is solid
The downsides:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Close to major attractions
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are manageable, gas is tough.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Pros I've experienced:

- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:

- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are affordable, gas is underrated.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 3 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into running, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The South side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Highland. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
