Cost of living reality check -Salem

Longtime lurker here, I'm single, late 30s, and The median home value here is around $497,400, which is pretty steep. Average temperature is around 51--F, so expect cold winters. You can expect to pay around $1,800 for rent here. Homes are going for about $497,400 on average. The weather takes some getting used to. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Thoughts?

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.

I've been here 14 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Public transit is solid here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's exactly what I was looking for.

The food scene here is decent. Tons of great Italian places. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want healthcare, then yeah this place is great. But if walkability matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is job market. it's been a really good experience overall. Worth doing your research before committing.
