Day-to-day life in Salem, MA

Hi all, I'm a 54-year-old police officer and It's a a smaller city city with about 44,241 people. Median household income is $85,137, which feels pretty solid for the area. Homes are going for about $497,400 on average. With a population of 44,241, Salem is a smaller city. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The suburbs are where most families end up. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value walkability, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely pretty good and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Fairview) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Salt Lake City, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a writer who relocated here from San Francisco about 12 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Active local events and festivals
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Limited shopping options

Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are stable, gas is challenging.

Socially, I love the pace of life here. Definitely worth checking out..

If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely pretty good and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Springfield) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

As someone who grew up here, it exceeded my expectations. A lot has changed in the past few years though. cost of living used to be much reasonable but now it's average.

If you value housing market, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely excellent and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Sunset) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a electrician, 28, moved here 6 years ago from Boston. I've lived in Fairview and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Great outdoor activities nearby
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Road conditions need improvement
2. Can feel isolated
3. The pet-friendliness situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Fairview: Great for young professionals. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $40K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
