First post here. We have two kids and Median household income is $85,137, which feels pretty solid for the area. Crime rate is something to consider -Salem sits at 248.6 per 100K. Average temperature is around 51--F, so expect cold winters. The weather takes some getting used to. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The weather takes some getting used to. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. it was the best decision I ever made. Compared to Dallas it's better than expected.

The food scene here is solid. Tons of great craft beer places. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely average and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Riverside) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've been living here for 6 years and I'd say the quality of life is solid. The pet-friendliness is surprisingly good compared to other places I've lived. Overall Would recommend to anyone considering it..
