First post here. I work in logistics and Household incomes average around $66,653 in Salem. You can expect to pay around $772 for rent here. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The weather takes some getting used to.

I work in consulting here and it's not perfect but it works for me. The job market for my field is improving. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Came here for school and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The pet-friendliness is honestly hit or miss and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I love the pace of life here. Hope this helps!.

Came here for family and stayed because there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The community vibe is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a sales manager, 29, moved here 8 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in Sunset and South, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Urban sprawl is real
3. The healthcare situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Sunset: Great for families. excellent vibes, walkable.
- South: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$130K here.
**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
