Worst things about Salem nobody talks about
Hello, I'm a teacher here and Household incomes average around $50,250 in Salem. Crime rate is something to consider -Salem sits at 188.9 per 100K. Median household income is $50,250, which feels on the lower side for the area. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.
Pros:
- Growing food scene
- Low crime in most areas
- Close to nature
- Good internet infrastructure
- Good airport connections
Cons:
- Sprawl everywhere
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Chain restaurants dominate
Looking forward to hearing from you all. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The weather takes some getting used to. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.
