Anyone regret moving to Salem?

Hey everyone, The median home value here is around $382,400, which seems about average. Average temperature is around 53°F, so expect cold winters. The unemployment rate is 3.2%, which is pretty low. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Worth the trade-offs? People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The suburbs are where most families end up. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The food scene here is surprisingly good. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Sunset for 9 years. Moved from Charlotte for a fresh start. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is tough. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.

**Employment:**
engineering is strong here. hospitality is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are affordable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's improved dramatically in recent years. The outdoor scene is improving - we have mountains within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Sunset schools are pretty good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited public transit options. Urban sprawl is real. And healthcare can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 7/10. Definitely worth checking out.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want safety, then yeah this place is great. But if school system matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Downtown. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in retail you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like sushi.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I'm a marketing manager and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. The community is tough and there's always something going on.
