Unpopular opinion about Salem

Longtime lurker here, I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Rent is about $880/month for a decent place. Poverty rate is 2.2%, which is pretty low. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The weather takes some getting used to. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

I work in finance here and I love the pace of life here. The job market for my field is solid. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.

I've been here 12 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is tough.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Cedar Grove side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely tough and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (South) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a lawyer who relocated here from Houston about 6 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Strong job market in several industries

Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are affordable, gas is tough.

Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Hope this helps!.
