Best coffee shops in Salem?

Longtime lurker here, I'm a remote worker and Median household income is $66,716, which feels about average for the area. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely solid and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (West) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.

I've been here 15 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is underrated.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The South side vs the Uptown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value housing market, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely excellent and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely solid and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Fairview) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Old Town. It's average for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.

People: Generally pretty good. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: improving. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

No regrets on my end..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Fairview for 4 years. Moved from Nashville for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is underrated. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
engineering is strong here. hospitality is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it exceeded my expectations. The outdoor scene is excellent - we have desert landscapes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Fairview schools are better than expected. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Property taxes are high. Limited entertainment options. And public transit can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For singles, I'd say this is a 5/10. Feel free to reach out with questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Public transit is challenging here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.

I've been here 3 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is tough.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..

Used to live on the Downtown side, now on the West side. Completely different vibe. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

Hot take but I have mixed feelings honestly. I know a lot of people disagree but after 13 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value traffic, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely underrated and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Sunset) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 15 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is excellent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a project manager who relocated here from Portland about 6 years ago. The main reasons were work and weather.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
- Affordable housing options

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are stable, gas is challenging.

Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
