Been meaning to ask this. Military spouse here. Poverty rate is 7.3%, which is pretty low. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. What do you all think?

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 9 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value walkability, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely pretty good and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Midtown) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. community vibe is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 15 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I have mixed feelings honestly. Internet is average in most areas.

Weather-wise, the summers are surprisingly good and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want job market, then yeah this place is great. But if weather matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

I've been here 3 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is solid.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Highland side vs the East side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
