We have two kids and Household incomes average around $89,150 in Salinas. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Any advice would be great. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. it's not perfect but it works for me. Compared to Atlanta it's surprisingly good.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely underrated and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in East. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in engineering you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Thai.
