My family moved here when I was a kid. Thoughts? Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Public transit is hit or miss here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's improved dramatically in recent years.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want dating scene, then yeah this place is great. But if job market matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from Baltimore about 12 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Affordable housing options
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are growing, gas is challenging.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Hope this helps!.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a real estate agent, 30, moved here 1 years ago from Atlanta. I've lived in Oak Park and South, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Four distinct seasons
2. Strong sense of community
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Not very walkable outside downtown
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The nightlife situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Oak Park: Great for retirees. underrated vibes, walkable.
- South: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Atlanta, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $70K-$90K here.
**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are solid, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I've lived in Uptown for about 5 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Denver, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- The walkability scene is solid
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Road conditions need improvement
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for remote workers. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 14 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

Hot take but it exceeded my expectations. I know a lot of people disagree but after 7 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely underrated and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Fairview) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Denver, be prepared for the culture shock. community vibe is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

As someone who grew up here, it's exactly what I was looking for. A lot has changed in the past few years though. public transit used to be much wild but now it's surprisingly good.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from Raleigh about 10 years ago. The main reasons were school and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Affordable housing options
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Limited shopping options

Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Definitely worth checking out..
