Hey everyone, I relocated for work and The median home value here is around $1,199,400, which is pretty steep. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Thoughts? People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in The Heights. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in tech. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like seafood.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Compared to Chicago it's excellent.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely challenging and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Midtown) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
