Planning a move to San Buenaventura (Ventura) -neighborhoods?
Curious what people think. I'm single, late 50s, and Average temperature is around 59--F, so the weather is moderate. It's a a mid-size city city with about 110K people. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. What are your go-to spots? The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a writer who relocated here from Pittsburgh about 11 years ago. The main reasons were work and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Chain restaurants dominate
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are growing, gas is pretty good.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I've lived in Meadowbrook for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Atlanta, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Strong job market in several industries
- The traffic scene is solid
The downsides:
- Limited shopping options
- Limited entertainment options
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for remote workers. No regrets on my end..

- Limited high-paying job options
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are developing, gas is better than expected.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Definitely worth checking out..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely improving and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Eastside) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. community vibe is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the Cedar Grove side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
