Random thought, I grew up here but left for a while. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Anyone in a similar situation?

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Baltimore and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Lakewood. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in construction. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Southern.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 3 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.
I've been here 4 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the East side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Highland. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in marketing. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely underrated and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Highland) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Can feel isolated.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in Maple Ridge for about 12 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from Baltimore, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Lots of new development happening
- The pet-friendliness scene is average
The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Road conditions need improvement
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for families. No regrets on my end..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value housing market, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely challenging and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (North) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
