Great question. Here's my honest take after 1 years:
The good:
- Affordable compared to coastal cities
- Four seasons
- Pet-friendly city
The not-so-good:
- Summers are brutal
- Road conditions
The airport connections are {adj} which matters if you travel.. I'd say for retirees, San Francisco is improving.

Gonna share a detailed perspective since most replies are pretty surface-level.
I'm a young professional in Marina. Been here since 2019. People here are friendlier than I expected coming from {other}..
Neighborhood-wise, Marina has really evolved in the past few years. Castro is the up-and-coming spot right now. Noe Valley is where I'd look if budget is a concern.
Job market for government: solid. For hospitality: up-and-coming.
The food scene in {hood} is honestly incredible.

We pay /mo in Inner Sunset for a 1-bed and I think it's fair for the area. Public transit is {transit_feel} - you'll want a car.

OK let me break this down from someone who's been here a while.
Sunset vs Noe Valley: completely different vibes. Sunset is more solid with walkable streets and local shops. Noe Valley is quiet and better for students.
Cost-wise, expect /mo minimum for anything decent in Sunset. In Noe Valley you can find stuff for /mo.
Downtown has improved dramatically since I first moved here.. Nightlife is decent if you know where to go.
