With a population of 990K, San Jose is a major city. The weather takes some getting used to. The suburbs are where most families end up. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. I've lived in Old Town for about 5 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Affordable housing options
- The outdoor recreation scene is tough
The downsides:
- Property taxes are high
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for singles. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Nashville about 1 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good internet infrastructure
- Active local events and festivals
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Chain restaurants dominate
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are developing, gas is average.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
