Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Raleigh about 15 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good internet infrastructure
- Four distinct seasons
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Chain restaurants dominate

Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are wild, gas is improving.

Socially, it exceeded my expectations. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Used to live on the Westside side, now on the Pine Hills side. Completely different vibe. it was the best decision I ever made.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's been a really good experience overall. Internet is pretty good in most areas.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is healthcare. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Worth doing your research before committing.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. it's exactly what I was looking for. Compared to Minneapolis it's excellent.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by school system. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
- The weather scene is average

The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for young professionals. Feel free to reach out with questions..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are solid, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good schools in most areas
- The cultural scene scene is better than expected

The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Nightlife is limited

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for families. Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a electrician, 28, moved here 14 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in Cedar Grove and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Limited shopping options
3. The public transit situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Cedar Grove: Great for young professionals. solid vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Nashville, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $70K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
