San Juan zona urbana quality of life — am I missing something?

Hey folks, I'm a 40-year-old contractor and Rent is about $598/month for a decent place. It's a a mid-size city city with about 321K people. The unemployment rate is 7.5%, which is concerning. The median home value here is around $174,000, which is actually reasonable. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. What are your go-to spots? Night life is decent if you know the right spots. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much.

I've been living here for 14 years and I'd say the quality of life is solid. The weather is surprisingly good compared to other places I've lived. Overall Feel free to reach out with questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.

I've been here 15 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is tough.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a electrician, 33, moved here 14 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Eastside and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Good healthcare facilities
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Limited shopping options
3. The food scene situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for remote workers. excellent vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Portland about 14 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Close to major attractions
- Affordable housing options
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Property taxes are high

Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are manageable, gas is underrated.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. it was the best decision I ever made. Compared to New York it's improving.

I work in legal here and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The job market for my field is challenging. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Bought a house here in 2019 and it's not perfect but it works for me. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Minneapolis about 7 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and my partner's job.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good healthcare facilities
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Can feel isolated

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are growing, gas is pretty good.

Socially, I love the pace of life here. Definitely worth checking out..

We moved here with our family and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Schools in Highland area are challenging. Kids love it here.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are decent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

The food scene here is better than expected. Tons of great Indian places. I have mixed feelings honestly.
