OK so I'm originally from Atlanta and Poverty rate is 22.1%, which is higher than I expected. Homes are going for about $197,400 on average. Average temperature is around 76--F, so it's warm year-round. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.
Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Lots of new development
- Walkable downtown
Cons:
- Sprawl everywhere
- Limited dining options
- High property taxes
Worth the trade-offs? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The suburbs are where most families end up. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a teacher, 25, moved here 2 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in West and Riverside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good internet infrastructure
2. Close to major attractions
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Property taxes are high
3. The food scene situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for young professionals. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Riverside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $70K-$80K here.
**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Bought a house here in 2022 and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 7 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Hot take but it was the best decision I ever made. I know a lot of people disagree but after 7 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Public transit is challenging here. You'll probably need a car for most things. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from Nashville about 11 years ago. The main reasons were school and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Active local events and festivals
- Close to major attractions
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are developing, gas is better than expected.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are affordable, gas is challenging.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Feel free to reach out with questions..

I've been here 14 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is underrated.

I'm a contractor who relocated here from San Francisco about 3 years ago. The main reasons were family and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good internet infrastructure
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Chain restaurants dominate
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are wild, gas is better than expected.
Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Meadowbrook. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in real estate. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like Indian.
No regrets on my end..

I've lived in Oak Park for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from Denver, I was surprised by dating scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good healthcare facilities
- The traffic scene is average
The downsides:
- Dating scene is rough
- Far from beaches/mountains
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for singles. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
