First post here. I relocated for work and Crime rate is something to consider -San Marcos sits at 363.6 per 100K. Rent is about $1,299/month for a decent place. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Property taxes are high but you get good services. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Phoenix and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Meadowbrook. It's tough for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in marketing. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like BBQ.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from Minneapolis about 12 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Limited high-paying job options
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are competitive, gas is underrated.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Definitely worth checking out..
