Raising a family in San Marino -thoughts?

Household incomes average around $187,633 in San Marino. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The weather takes some getting used to. Let me know your thoughts. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Maple Ridge. It's better than expected for what you get.

Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in retail. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.

People: Generally solid. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: solid. Tons of options if you like craft beer.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a nurse, 24, moved here 9 years ago from Portland. I've lived in Fairview and South, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Can feel isolated
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The public transit situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Fairview: Great for couples. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- South: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Portland, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've lived in Pine Hills for about 9 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from Atlanta, I was surprised by outdoor recreation. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good schools in most areas
- The weather scene is pretty good

The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Rising rent and home prices

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. Definitely worth checking out..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value job market, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely excellent and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Lakewood) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've been living here for 12 years and I'd say it's improved dramatically in recent years. The safety is pretty good compared to other places I've lived. Overall Hope this helps!.
