Best kept secrets of San Rafael, CA

Hi all, Been living here since 2022. Homes are going for about $1,246,200 on average. Poverty rate is 5.5%, which is pretty low. You can expect to pay around $2,346 for rent here. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Pros:
- Good schools
- Easy commute
- Lots of new development
- Walkable downtown

Cons:
- Limited public transit
- Poor road conditions
- Far from major airports
- Homelessness issues downtown
Would love some local perspective. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The weather takes some getting used to. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The city has invested a lot in new development. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Westside for 4 years. Moved from Charlotte for work. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is underrated. We bought in 2019 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
hospitality is strong here. consulting is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are growing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's exactly what I was looking for. The outdoor scene is hit or miss - we have desert landscapes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Westside schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Summers can be brutally hot. Bugs and humidity in summer. And dating scene can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 6/10. Happy to answer more specific questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I work in retail here and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The job market for my field is underrated. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.

I've been here 6 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is excellent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Fairview side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Hope this helps!.

My experience has been mostly positive. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The only thing I'd watch out for is nightlife. Other than that, Feel free to reach out with questions..
