How are the schools in Santa Barbara?

Hi all, Military spouse here. Homes are going for about $1,466,400 on average. Poverty rate is 6.7%, which is pretty low. Median household income is $101,672, which feels pretty solid for the area. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Any advice would be great. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

I'm a social worker and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. The community is excellent and there's always something going on.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely average and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Uptown) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from San Diego, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Limited shopping options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a chef, 52, moved here 10 years ago from Austin. I've lived in Oak Park and West, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Good healthcare facilities
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not very walkable outside downtown
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The safety situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Oak Park: Great for young professionals. decent vibes, walkable.
- West: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Austin, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

My experience has been mostly positive. it was the best decision I ever made. The only thing I'd watch out for is job market. Other than that, Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 12 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a teacher who relocated here from Tampa about 13 years ago. The main reasons were weather and weather.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good healthcare facilities

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Summers can be brutally hot

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are stable, gas is tough.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Feel free to reach out with questions..

I've lived in Old Town for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from New York, I was surprised by outdoor recreation. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The housing market scene is average

The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Limited shopping options

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for young professionals. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've lived in Uptown for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from Charlotte, I was surprised by school system. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Active local events and festivals
- The cost of living scene is surprisingly good

The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Winters are long and cold

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for singles. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are improving, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
