Been meaning to ask this. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Used to live on the Old Town side, now on the Oak Park side. Completely different vibe. I love the pace of life here.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's been a really good experience overall. Internet is hit or miss in most areas.

Bought a house here in 2024 and I have mixed feelings honestly. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 13 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is average.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the East side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

My experience has been mostly positive. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The only thing I'd watch out for is safety. Other than that, Feel free to reach out with questions..

Moved here from Dallas about 8 years ago. it's not perfect but it works for me. Still getting used to pet-friendliness but No regrets on my end..

Used to live on the Cedar Grove side, now on the West side. Completely different vibe. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. it's been a really good experience overall. Compared to Atlanta it's solid.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Downtown. It's pretty good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in government. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.
