Been meaning to ask this. Rent is about $2,486/month for a decent place.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. it exceeded my expectations. Compared to Phoenix it's pretty good.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from Portland about 12 years ago. The main reasons were family and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Strong job market in several industries
- Lots of new development happening
Cons that are real:
- Homeless population growing downtown
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are established, gas is better than expected.
Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.
I've been here 9 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
