Just moved to Santa Maria from San Francisco — first impressions
We made the move 5 ago and here are my first impressions:
People are genuinely friendly here. Rent runs about $1,842/month for a typical apartment. Weather is moderate — about 58F average.
Biggest surprise: The food scene is way better than expected
Biggest disappointment: The winters are rougher than expected
Overall, it works for our family.

I've lived in Cedar Hills for 10 years and it's decent, has its pros and cons.

I'd add that the parks here are amazing for families. Otherwise spot on!

Don't sleep on Westside. It's up and coming and still affordable.

Weather is the biggest factor for us. Four seasons are nice, not too extreme either way.

Respectfully disagree about the safety concerns. In my experience, it really depends on your lifestyle.

Public transit needs work but they're investing in it. Should improve in next few years.

Check out the Maple Heights area. Way more affordable and still close to everything.

As someone who moved here from New York, I can confirm most of this. The weather surprised me the most.

If you can afford it, Northside is the best place to live. Period.

Great post! One thing I'd mention is drive around neighborhoods at different times before committing. Makes a big difference.

I've lived in Lakewood for 10 years and it's a hidden gem honestly.
