Curious what people think. You can expect to pay around $1,514 for rent here. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Should I be concerned? Thanks! People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The weather takes some getting used to. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Meadowbrook. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Southern.
Definitely worth checking out..

Public transit is excellent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I love the pace of life here.

The food scene here is hit or miss. Tons of great Southern places. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

I've lived in West for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Tampa, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Affordable housing options
- The job market scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Summers can be brutally hot
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for retirees. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely improving and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a lawyer who relocated here from Miami about 15 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good healthcare facilities
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are affordable, gas is underrated.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
