So, It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Am I wrong here?

Public transit is excellent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's not perfect but it works for me.

I work in retail here and it's exactly what I was looking for. The job market for my field is challenging. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Used to live on the Riverside side, now on the Oak Park side. Completely different vibe. I have mixed feelings honestly.

Moved here from Tampa about 7 years ago. I love the pace of life here. Still getting used to nightlife but It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Public transit is hit or miss here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

My experience has been mostly positive. it was the best decision I ever made. The only thing I'd watch out for is healthcare. Other than that, Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in South for 14 years. Moved from LA for a fresh start. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is average. We bought in 2015 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.
**Employment:**
retail is strong here. retail is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are affordable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's not perfect but it works for me. The outdoor scene is improving - we have desert landscapes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. South schools are pretty good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Property taxes are high. Dating scene is rough. And school system can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 5/10. No regrets on my end.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I've lived in Old Town for about 11 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Baltimore, I was surprised by job market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Affordable housing options
- The cost of living scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Can feel isolated
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for retirees. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
