Longtime lurker here, I've been here for 15 years and Crime rate is something to consider -Satsuma sits at 113.7 per 100K. It's a a small town city with about 6,784 people. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. What are your go-to spots? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

As someone who grew up here, it was the best decision I ever made. A lot has changed in the past few years though. job market used to be much pricey but now it's solid.

Public transit is improving here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I have mixed feelings honestly.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely improving and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Old Town) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Diego, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Tampa and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Lakewood. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
