Moving to Savannah — what should I know?

I got a job offer in Savannah, GA and I'm seriously considering the move. I'm coming from a mid-size city. A few questions:

1. Which neighborhoods should I look at for a $1000-1600 budget?
2. How's the commute situation?
3. Is the crime as bad as the stats suggest?
4. Any hidden costs I should know about?

Can confirm the safety issue. But it really depends on the neighborhood. Highland Park and Southside are perfectly safe.

I'd add that healthcare options are better than most cities this size. Otherwise spot on!
