Anyone else feel this way? I'm a nurse at the local hospital and The median home value here is around $629,800, which is pretty steep. Homes are going for about $629,800 on average. You can expect to pay around $3,205 for rent here. Average temperature is around 57--F, so the weather is moderate. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The weather takes some getting used to. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. What are your go-to spots? Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely pretty good and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you value food scene, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely better than expected and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Old Town) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are decent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's not perfect but it works for me. The only thing I'd watch out for is nightlife. Other than that, Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Phoenix and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Oak Park. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in consulting. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: improving. Tons of options if you like Indian.
Definitely worth checking out..

I've lived in Old Town for about 11 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Denver, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Lots of new development happening
- The school system scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for families. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from San Francisco about 8 years ago. The main reasons were work and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are affordable, gas is solid.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
