Why I chose Schenectady over bigger cities

I'm originally from Portland and Crime rate is something to consider -Schenectady sits at 806.1 per 100K. You can expect to pay around $1,109 for rent here. Average temperature is around 49--F, so expect cold winters. Homes are going for about $152,000 on average. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Friendly people
- Low crime in most areas
- Active local events

Cons:
- Limited public transit
- Boring for young people
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Far from major airports
- Homelessness issues downtown
It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it's not perfect but it works for me. Compared to Minneapolis it's decent.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 9 years ago. The main reasons were school and my partner's job.

Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good internet infrastructure
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Limited entertainment options
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are stable, gas is better than expected.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've been living here for 12 years and I'd say the quality of life is solid. The outdoor recreation is excellent compared to other places I've lived. Overall Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Weather-wise, the summers are hit or miss and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is safety. it was the best decision I ever made. Worth doing your research before committing.
