Curious what people think. I'm a remote worker and With a population of 29,627, Schererville is a smaller city. You can expect to pay around $1,224 for rent here. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Anyone in a similar situation?

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a social worker who relocated here from Phoenix about 4 years ago. The main reasons were weather and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good schools in most areas
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are pricey, gas is challenging.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I've lived in Greenfield for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from Dallas, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The weather scene is tough
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Summers can be brutally hot
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for couples. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Fairview for 15 years. Moved from Miami for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is hit or miss. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.
**Employment:**
education is strong here. manufacturing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are competitive for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's not perfect but it works for me. The outdoor scene is hit or miss - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Fairview schools are decent. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Property taxes are high. And safety can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For singles, I'd say this is a 8/10. It's not for everyone but it works for us.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

We moved here with our family and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Schools in Springfield area are surprisingly good. Kids love it here.

Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are growing. You get used to it after the first year.

Hot take but I'm still on the fence after all this time. I know a lot of people disagree but after 6 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. I have mixed feelings honestly. Compared to San Francisco it's pretty good.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.
I've been here 13 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is solid.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Greenfield side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are pretty good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
