Hey everyone, Crime rate is something to consider -Schertz sits at 184.2 per 100K. Worth the trade-offs?

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Houston about 15 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and work.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Lots of new development happening
- Close to major attractions

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Not a lot of cultural diversity

Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are pricey, gas is pretty good.

Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.

I've been here 3 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is tough.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..

Bought a house here in 2019 and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

Came here for a job opportunity and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The safety is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I've been living here for 8 years and I'd say I genuinely enjoy living here. The safety is surprisingly good compared to other places I've lived. Overall Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've lived in Old Town for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Seattle, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Decent public transit for the size
- The walkability scene is improving

The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Not very walkable outside downtown

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for retirees. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want nightlife, then yeah this place is great. But if nightlife matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a software engineer, 55, moved here 12 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in Springfield and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Not very walkable outside downtown
3. The traffic situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Springfield: Great for retirees. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Nashville, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
