Hey everyone, It's a a small town city with about 10,544 people. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Anyone in a similar situation?

I've lived in Oak Park for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good internet infrastructure
- Close to major attractions
- The housing market scene is decent
The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Limited entertainment options
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for retirees. Hope this helps!.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Raleigh and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Springfield. It's underrated for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Italian.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

I've lived in Cedar Grove for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from New York, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Four distinct seasons
- Good airport with direct flights
- The traffic scene is improving
The downsides:
- Limited shopping options
- Far from beaches/mountains
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. Good luck with whatever you decide..

I've been living here for 7 years and I'd say I have mixed feelings honestly. The pet-friendliness is decent compared to other places I've lived. Overall Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want job market, then yeah this place is great. But if weather matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

I've lived in The Heights for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from New York, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The school system scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Limited high-paying job options
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for singles. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Hot take but it was the best decision I ever made. I know a lot of people disagree but after 5 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a lawyer, 58, moved here 13 years ago from San Diego. I've lived in Greenfield and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The outdoor recreation situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Greenfield: Great for remote workers. solid vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Diego, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $70K-$80K here.
**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Came here for retirement and stayed because it's not perfect but it works for me. The community vibe is honestly average and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
