Raising a family in Scott City -thoughts?

Curious what people think. I'm a remote worker and Crime rate is something to consider -Scott City sits at 210.6 per 100K. The median home value here is around $166,400, which is actually reasonable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Am I wrong here? Cheers.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely decent and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Baltimore about 1 years ago. The main reasons were weather and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good schools in most areas
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are developing, gas is pretty good.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. No regrets on my end..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want traffic, then yeah this place is great. But if healthcare matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Bought a house here in 2024 and it's improved dramatically in recent years. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are excellent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
