Rent in Scotts Valley getting crazy

So, I'm single, late 20s, and Average temperature is around 61--F, so the weather is moderate. Crime rate is something to consider -Scotts Valley sits at 109.5 per 100K. With a population of 12,138, Scotts Valley is a small town. Household incomes average around $140,887 in Scotts Valley. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The suburbs are where most families end up. Anyone in a similar situation? TIA! It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The weather takes some getting used to. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it was the best decision I ever made. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Bought a house here in 2016 and it's been a really good experience overall. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Meadowbrook for 15 years. Moved from Atlanta for cost of living. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is average. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
healthcare is strong here. marketing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are reasonable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The outdoor scene is excellent - we have state parks within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Meadowbrook schools are average. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Chain restaurants dominate. Can feel isolated. And outdoor recreation can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 7/10. Good luck with whatever you decide.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

We moved here with our family and I have mixed feelings honestly. Schools in Old Town area are decent. Kids love it here.

My experience has been mostly positive. the quality of life is solid. The only thing I'd watch out for is school system. Other than that, Feel free to reach out with questions..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I'm still on the fence after all this time. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

As someone who grew up here, it's improved dramatically in recent years. A lot has changed in the past few years though. job market used to be much manageable but now it's decent.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a lawyer, 34, moved here 3 years ago from San Diego. I've lived in Fairview and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Growing food and restaurant scene
3. Good schools in most areas
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited high-paying job options
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The weather situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Fairview: Great for young professionals. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Diego, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $50K-$150K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Came here for a job opportunity and stayed because I love the pace of life here. The nightlife is honestly hit or miss and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
