Raising a family in Seattle — thoughts?

Random thought, I've been here for 1 years and The median home value here is around $912,100, which is pretty steep. Rent is about $1,998/month for a decent place. Crime rate is something to consider — Seattle sits at 585.4 per 100K. It's a a major city city with about 741K people. Median household income is $121,984, which feels pretty solid for the area. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

Pros:
- Low taxes
- Easy commute
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Lack of diversity
- Far from major airports
- Chain restaurants dominate
Would love some local perspective. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The city has invested a lot in new development. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The city has invested a lot in new development.

Public transit is solid here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it exceeded my expectations.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.

I've been here 4 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is underrated.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Greenfield side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are average, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Sunset for 1 years. Moved from Atlanta for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is tough. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.

**Employment:**
marketing is strong here. manufacturing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I'm still on the fence after all this time. The outdoor scene is underrated - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Sunset schools are pretty good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Rising rent and home prices. Limited high-paying job options. And public transit can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For singles, I'd say this is a 8/10. Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's not perfect but it works for me. The only thing I'd watch out for is housing market. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Bought a house here in 2023 and it was the best decision I ever made. Property values have gone about the same since then.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a chef who relocated here from Denver about 14 years ago. The main reasons were school and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good healthcare facilities

Cons that are real:
- Dating scene is rough
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are growing, gas is challenging.

Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.

I've been here 13 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is average.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Riverside. It's challenging for what you get.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in tech. If you're in consulting you might struggle.

People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Southern.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Lakewood for 13 years. Moved from Raleigh for a fresh start. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is better than expected. We bought in 2019 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
construction is strong here. legal is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are pricey for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The outdoor scene is tough - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Lakewood schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Rising rent and home prices. Urban sprawl is real. And job market can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 6/10. Would recommend to anyone considering it.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.
