Average temperature is around 66--F, so the weather is moderate. Median household income is $32,184, which feels on the lower side for the area. With a population of 17,442, Selma is a small town. The suburbs are where most families end up. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Is this normal for Selma? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a nurse who relocated here from Baltimore about 6 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Four distinct seasons
- Close to major attractions
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are growing, gas is excellent.
Socially, the quality of life is solid. No regrets on my end..

Public transit is better than expected here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's been a really good experience overall.

I work in consulting here and the quality of life is solid. The job market for my field is challenging. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Came here for a fresh start and stayed because the quality of life is solid. The food scene is honestly tough and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a data analyst, 34, moved here 5 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Pine Hills and Meadowbrook, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Lots of new development happening
2. Affordable housing options
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Nightlife is limited
3. The food scene situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Pine Hills: Great for couples. average vibes, walkable.
- Meadowbrook: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $40K-$140K here.
**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
