Cost of living reality check -Shiloh

Hi all, I'm retired and Crime rate is something to consider -Shiloh sits at 98.7 per 100K. It's a a small town city with about 14,109 people. The weather takes some getting used to. What neighborhoods would you suggest? Thanks for reading.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it exceeded my expectations. Compared to Portland it's pretty good.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a lawyer who relocated here from Portland about 7 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and work.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Close to major attractions
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Road conditions need improvement

Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are growing, gas is average.

Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Hope this helps!.

I've lived in The Heights for about 11 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Boston, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Lots of new development happening
- The school system scene is surprisingly good

The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for remote workers. Definitely worth checking out..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Lakewood. It's surprisingly good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in legal. If you're in consulting you might struggle.

People: Generally improving. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Thai.

Definitely worth checking out..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Riverside. It's better than expected for what you get.

Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in real estate you might struggle.

People: Generally average. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Southern.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in South for 6 years. Moved from Atlanta for cost of living. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is improving. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.

**Employment:**
manufacturing is strong here. retail is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are growing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's not perfect but it works for me. The outdoor scene is decent - we have state parks within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. South schools are underrated. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Traffic during rush hour is rough. Road conditions need improvement. And public transit can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 5/10. Definitely worth checking out.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

We moved here with our family and it was the best decision I ever made. Schools in East area are hit or miss. Kids love it here.

I've been living here for 10 years and I'd say I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The housing market is tough compared to other places I've lived. Overall It's not for everyone but it works for us..
