We moved here with our family and it was the best decision I ever made. Schools in Oak Park area are solid. Kids love it here.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value traffic, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely improving and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Eastside) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've been living here for 3 years and I'd say it's improved dramatically in recent years. The nightlife is improving compared to other places I've lived. Overall Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I'm a writer who relocated here from San Francisco about 9 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Strong job market in several industries
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are competitive, gas is pretty good.

As someone who grew up here, it's not perfect but it works for me. A lot has changed in the past few years though. school system used to be much wild but now it's better than expected.

My experience has been mostly positive. I love the pace of life here. The only thing I'd watch out for is walkability. Other than that, Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
