Affordable areas near Silver Lake?

Alright, Rent is about $1,289/month for a decent place. Crime rate is something to consider -Silver Lake sits at 675.4 per 100K. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from Portland about 4 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
- Close to major attractions

Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are wild, gas is challenging.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from San Francisco and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in East. It's tough for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in retail. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally better than expected. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Thai.

Hope this helps!.
