Best industries in Skagway right now

I grew up here but left for a while. The unemployment rate is 7.9%, which is concerning. Rent is about $1,228/month for a decent place. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The weather takes some getting used to. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in East for 4 years. Moved from Baltimore for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is excellent. We bought in 2021 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.

**Employment:**
legal is strong here. construction is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
the quality of life is solid. The outdoor scene is hit or miss - we have mountains within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. East schools are solid. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Traffic during rush hour is rough. Winters are long and cold. And safety can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 7/10. Feel free to reach out with questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I'm a nurse and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. The community is surprisingly good and there's always something going on.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are average, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Hot take but I genuinely enjoy living here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 5 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Public transit is excellent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I have mixed feelings honestly.

My experience has been mostly positive. it was the best decision I ever made. The only thing I'd watch out for is job market. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..

We moved here with our family and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Schools in Cedar Grove area are pretty good. Kids love it here.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely better than expected and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Eastside) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
