Been meaning to ask this. The unemployment rate is 3.3%, which is pretty low. Poverty rate is 7.9%, which is pretty low. Rent is about $1,491/month for a decent place. Homes are going for about $368,600 on average. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Is this normal for Skokie? The weather takes some getting used to. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

I've lived in Springfield for about 11 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from Minneapolis, I was surprised by school system. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Lots of new development happening
- Good airport with direct flights
- The school system scene is excellent
The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Can feel isolated
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for couples. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Bought a house here in 2016 and the quality of life is solid. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it was the best decision I ever made. Compared to Houston it's surprisingly good.

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are reasonable. You get used to it after the first year.

Hot take but I'm still on the fence after all this time. I know a lot of people disagree but after 10 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a lawyer who relocated here from Houston about 4 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and work.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Close to major attractions
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are manageable, gas is improving.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

As someone who grew up here, I genuinely enjoy living here. A lot has changed in the past few years though. walkability used to be much developing but now it's solid.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a sales manager, 35, moved here 10 years ago from Pittsburgh. I've lived in West and South, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The dating scene situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for families. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- South: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Pittsburgh, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$140K here.
**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
