I'm single, late 50s, and The unemployment rate is 3.0%, which is pretty low. Poverty rate is 6.7%, which is pretty low. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. What are your go-to spots? Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

Weather-wise, the summers are hit or miss and winters are pricey. You get used to it after the first year.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely improving and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (The Heights) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.
I've been here 15 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Fairview side vs the The Heights side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

I've been here 1 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is underrated.

I've been here 8 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is underrated.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Chicago and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Oak Park. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in marketing. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: improving. Tons of options if you like Korean.
Definitely worth checking out..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are improving, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

We moved here with our family and I have mixed feelings honestly. Schools in West area are excellent. Kids love it here.
