Why I chose Smyrna over bigger cities

Hey folks, We have two kids and With a population of 55,066, Smyrna is a smaller city. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

I've lived in Downtown for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Seattle, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Four distinct seasons
- The healthcare scene is tough

The downsides:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Property taxes are high

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for families. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Sunset. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in retail. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like sushi.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I have mixed feelings honestly. Happy to answer more specific questions..

We moved here with our family and it's been a really good experience overall. Schools in Sunset area are improving. Kids love it here.

I work in consulting here and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The job market for my field is challenging. No regrets on my end..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it exceeded my expectations. Internet is tough in most areas.

Bought a house here in 2023 and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Property values have gone down slightly since then.
