Job market in Socorro for tech?

It's a a smaller city city with about 36,237 people. The unemployment rate is 3.2%, which is pretty low. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Public transit is hit or miss here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a teacher, 34, moved here 13 years ago from Pittsburgh. I've lived in Cedar Grove and Eastside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The traffic situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Cedar Grove: Great for young professionals. improving vibes, walkable.
- Eastside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Pittsburgh, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $50K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Maple Ridge for 4 years. Moved from Miami for retirement. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is tough. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.

**Employment:**
education is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's improved dramatically in recent years. The outdoor scene is surprisingly good - we have biking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Maple Ridge schools are better than expected. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Nightlife is limited. Not very walkable outside downtown. And walkability can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 6/10. Good luck with whatever you decide.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a lawyer who relocated here from Raleigh about 7 years ago. The main reasons were weather and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are developing, gas is tough.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.

I've been here 11 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is pretty good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..
