Best kept secrets of Somerset, NJ

Been meaning to ask this. The median home value here is around $408,600, which is pretty steep. The unemployment rate is 2.7%, which is pretty low. Average temperature is around 51--F, so expect cold winters. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Pros:
- Friendly people
- Low taxes
- Strong sense of community
- Walkable downtown
- Plenty of shopping options

Cons:
- Cold winters
- Limited nightlife
- Not very walkable
Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The weather takes some getting used to. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it exceeded my expectations. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Bought a house here in 2018 and I love the pace of life here. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a lawyer who relocated here from New York about 14 years ago. The main reasons were family and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Lots of new development happening
- Affordable housing options

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Property taxes are high

Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are wild, gas is excellent.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
