I'm a remote worker and Rent is about $2,050/month for a decent place. With a population of 23,851, Somerset is a small town. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. What neighborhoods would you suggest? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

I've been living here for 8 years and I'd say there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The food scene is solid compared to other places I've lived. Overall It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a marketing manager, 52, moved here 1 years ago from Chicago. I've lived in Old Town and East, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Good healthcare facilities
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Nightlife is limited
3. The safety situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Old Town: Great for families. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- East: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Chicago, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $70K-$140K here.
**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
